Portable Toilets for Events: How Many Do You Actually Need?

July 17, 2026lhsadmin2026PlanningNo comments

Plan for one portable toilet per 75-100 pax for a half-day event, and closer to one per 50-75 pax if alcohol is served or the event runs longer than 5-6 hours. This isn’t guesswork — it’s the ratio that keeps queues manageable without over-ordering units you don’t need. Adjust up for outdoor events with no nearby building facilities at all.

How many portable toilets do you need for different event sizes?

Pax count Standard event Event with alcohol / long duration
50 pax 1 unit 1-2 units
100 pax 1-2 units 2 units
200 pax 2-3 units 3-4 units
500 pax 5-6 units 7-8 units

These ratios assume a roughly even gender split. If your event skews heavily toward one gender, or you’re adding a dedicated accessible unit, adjust the count and mix accordingly.

Do you need portable toilets if the venue has existing facilities?

Not always, but check three things first: whether the existing toilets are close enough to the tentage area, whether they can handle your guest count without long queues, and whether the venue allows event guests to use them at all. Some void deck and park facilities are public toilets not designed for a 200-pax event descending on them at once.

The most common mistake we see is assuming nearby public toilets are “good enough,” only to find long queues form within the first hour because the facility wasn’t sized for a concentrated crowd.

What types of portable toilets are available?

  1. Standard portable units. Basic, functional, suited to most corporate events, void deck functions, and casual gatherings.
  2. Deluxe/VIP trailers. Flushing systems, running water, and a more comfortable interior — common for weddings and premium corporate events.
  3. Accessible units. Wider doors and grab bars, worth including for any event expecting elderly or disabled guests, which is common for community and family events.

Where should portable toilets be placed relative to tentage?

Position units close enough to be convenient but far enough that they’re not visible from the main seating or stage area, ideally with a clear, well-lit path. Avoid placing them directly downwind of the buffet or dining area. Your tentage crew can help plan this into the overall site layout — see what happens on setup day for how site layout decisions get made.

FAQ

Do small void deck events need portable toilets?

Often not, if the void deck is close to existing HDB block facilities that residents or guests can access. Confirm with your town council if guest access to block facilities is expected or restricted.

How far in advance should I book portable toilets?

Book alongside your tentage, ideally 2-4 weeks ahead. Deluxe or accessible units are more limited in supply and get booked out faster during peak season.

How much does portable toilet rental cost in Singapore?

Standard units typically run SGD 150-300 per unit for a one-day event. Deluxe trailers cost significantly more, often SGD 800-1,500 depending on features and duration.

Do portable toilets need their own power or water connection?

Standard units are self-contained and need neither. Deluxe flushing units may need a water source, which your supplier will confirm during booking.

Can portable toilets be serviced during a multi-day event?

Yes, most suppliers offer servicing (cleaning, restocking) for multi-day rentals — confirm this is included rather than assumed for longer events.

How does weather affect portable toilet planning?

During the NE monsoon (Nov-Jan) or any rainy stretch, confirm units are placed on stable, well-drained ground and connected to your tentage layout with a covered walkway if possible. Muddy or waterlogged access paths are a common complaint at outdoor events during wetter months.

For events with covered walkways already planned as part of your wet-weather contingency, extend that coverage to the toilet path too — it’s a small addition that avoids guests getting soaked on the way there.

Should portable toilets be included in your tentage quote?

Many suppliers can bundle toilet rental with your tentage booking, which simplifies coordination and often saves on separate delivery charges. Ask whether this is available when you request your quote, rather than sourcing it separately afterward.

Your next step

Include your expected pax count and event duration when you request a quote so we can recommend the right number and type of units alongside your tentage.
